Poem - The Song Inside the Song

I said the room was warm and the room was cold and I said it at the same time because I was in it with someone and we were both right and the room held both of us the way a sentence holds two words that don't agree and I said the light was kind and the light was clinical and the bulb above us hummed its one suspended note that was neither warm nor cold but the sound of not deciding and I said the tea was good and the tea was bitter and the cup went round and I drank from the side she drank from and she drank from the side I drank from and the cup was the floor we both stood on and I said the door was open and the door was shut and the draught came through anyway because a door that is both open and shut is a door that exists in the same breath as its own disagreement and I said you stayed and you left and I said it in the same clause because you did both and the staying and the leaving were the same gesture the way a hand that reaches out and a hand that pulls back are the same hand at the same moment and I said the song was mine and the song was yours and the song fell inside another song the way a voice falls inside another voice when neither will leave the room and the room was warm and the room was cold and I was the room.
