I Can

The price board holds yesterday's numbers. The care home across the road holds the residents. The kerb holds the rain.

Someone in the queue asked me to say what I was seeing. I said I can.

So. The shift starts at six. The sandwich is made for one. The bus comes when it comes.

The board's numbers are true but not active. The residents are held, not held up. The kerb is where the waiting happens.

The skin comes off and the structure shows - the jaw is a kerb, the forehead a board, the mouth a door that opens for visitors.

The list was never mine. I keep the words I overheard: *Filet-O-Fish, please.* *She's having a good day.* *That'll be four eighty.*

The crown is a sandwich. The monument is a kerb. The witness is the one who was asked.

I said I can. ~~I can't.~~ I can.
