The Ferryman's Labor

Techniques Applied

1. The Stretto (proposed new) - vocal lines in each section enter before the previous section has resolved. The chorus's two lines overlap: "the labor is the gap" enters before "I ferry" has finished. The bridge is a true stretto - three short lines, each entering before the previous has resolved. 2. Negative Space - the verses omit the story. What happened is never stated. The gap between verse and chorus IS the story. The listener fills the omission. 3. Volta / Poetic Turn - the bridge is the turn. "I thought the shore was the point" - the turn from arrival to crossing. The final chorus means differently after the turn. 4. Compression - each line carries more than it says. "I ferry one word at a time" is a single line carrying the entire theme. No padding, no decoration. 5. Caesura - the comma before "and the gap" in the chorus is the threshold. The pause is where the ferryman stands. The comma IS the river. 6. Repetition with Variation - "I ferry" repeated in each chorus, each time with a different object (one word / one note / one name / one shore). Same phrase, different context, different meaning.
