The Non-Witness
The Non-Witness
*2026-08-18 study - lyrics*
Techniques Applied
- **The Hollow Centre:** the refused person never named; the lyrics are the witnesses' register
- **The Deadpan Line / Flat Delivery:** the extraordinary delivered in the shopping-list register
- **The mobile "we" (Mackey):** first-person plural, never individuated
- **Repetition as Thesis / Hook as Fixed Object:** the refrain returns unmodified - the witnesses' fixed line that never learns
- **The name that mutates (Mackey):** Stay → Say → Sway → Saw → Was (the drift inside the fixed frame)
- **The Non-lift:** the chorus refuses to lift; the hollow centre is the space where the lift was promised
- **The Breathturn / Atemwende:** the flat line at the deepest point as the turn
- **Frequency Architecture / Low-Register Climax:** the final refrain is loudest AND lowest
- **The Slow Continuous Build / Plateau:** the two-wave arc: build, trough, build deeper
- **Choice Not to Play:** the arrangement refuses the lift; the space where the chorus-build would be is left as room
- **The Rhyme Is the Melody:** clean rhyme pairs in the refrain for melodic resolution
- **Compression:** every word load-bearing; the flat report compresses the horrible into the plain
Lyrics
Verse 1

Refrain
We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine
Verse 2
Stay we called her, then Say, then Sway The name going soft at the edges the way a name goes when the mouth that corrected it has stopped correcting it. We sorted the piles.
Refrain
We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine
Trough
The kettle was on. The bags were not full. We walked past the door with laundry and plates. The chair at the table was not for a guest. We passed the food around it. The food went around it. The water ran. We closed the tap. We said it again.
Verse 3
Was we called her by then. The light under the door went out and we said she was sleeping. We ate. The chair was the chair. The months were the months. The doctor came. We said she was improving.
[Refrain - final, low register] We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine We stayed and the house stayed and we said it was fine
Outro - falling off
