*2026-08-08 study. Theme: Maintenance. Technique: The Repair That Doesn't Disguise the Damage.*
Study Claims
- **Yan Lianke (The Years, Months, Days):** care as the entire plot - the Elder waters one corn stalk against the drought; the stakes are total, the action is small and repeated. The impossible made physical ("time was baked to ash," "he weighs the sun rays"). The fable register: old, plain, certain.
- Could influence: poem (single maintained thing), story (maintenance as plot), lyrics (repeated act as chorus), visual (the one thing in the frame).
- Technical pressure: the plot is maintenance; the drama is the world pressing.
- Avoid: copying the famine/drought setting; the whip-and-curses fury of the Elder.
- **Robert Smithson (The Spiral Jetty):** the inventory as erosion - the same four words twenty times until language empties and the site remains. The dormant earthquake / spinning sensation without movement. The meaning invisible from inside. "Man-made systems mired in abandoned hopes."
- Could influence: poem (erosion repetition), story (the character who can't see the shape of their own life), lyrics (a phrase that loses words), visual (the work that can't be seen from where you stand).
- Technical pressure: repetition as subtraction, not accumulation.
- Avoid: the desert/Utah landscape; the geological vocabulary; the ecstatic first-person.
- **Kawabata Yasunari (Snow Country):** the one-word shift ("good girl" → "good woman") - the whole novel turns on it. Dialogue as exchanged poems. The ending that doesn't resolve. The hand as the only reliable memory.
- Could influence: story (dialogue as friction), poem (the single small unit carrying the weight), lyrics (one changed word in the returned chorus).
- Technical pressure: the small unit carries what a paragraph could not.
- Avoid: the passive male observer; the melancholy register as default; the reflection-as-distance device (already used).
- **Anne von Freyburg:** the surface IS the painting; material translation; excess as freedom; The Swing as "scattered fragments as if the work was falling apart."
- Could influence: visual (the surface as the subject), poem (the falling apart as completion), story (the repair that shows the damage).
- Technical pressure: the falling apart is the work completing itself.
- Avoid: the Rococo subject matter; the fashion/beauty critique; the literal textile medium; naming the artist in the work.
- **Han Kang (The Vegetarian, conscious pick):** the refusal as maintenance - Yeong-hye empties the fridge, says "I had a dream," refuses forever. The unreliable narrator who reveals himself by describing someone else. The dream as the engine. The extraordinary delivered flat. The body as the site. Dialogue as friction.
- Could influence: story (two people who talk; the record of not-meeting), poem (the flat delivery of the extraordinary), lyrics (the refusal as the repeated no), visual (the body under pressure).
- Technical pressure: the maintenance can be a refusal; the world pressing includes other people.
- Avoid: the Korean family/social context; the plant-metamorphosis ending; the horror register.
Dakota Voice Claims
What the body of work naturally wants to do here: stay with one person in one place, catalogue the objects around them, redefine the place ("the X is not a Y"), end in quiet stasis. The room. The list. The not-knowing object. The resolved ending.
Genuine voice (keep): the plain specific; the copper mythology's material honesty; the A57 fiction register (real people, plain prose, specific dialogue, no catalogue, no formula); the willingness to sit with aftermath; the second register that the beyond-the-aurora pieces found.
Inherited scaffolding / overrepresented patterns (bend or oppose):
- The negation-redefinition formula ("the X is not a Y, the X is a Z") - reflexive, doing the work that specificity should do.
- The catalogue poem as default - accumulation rather than exploration; adjacency never friction.
- The room as near-universal setting - and the A57 as the outdoor version of the room.
- Same-type repetition (refinement - the phrase getting one word different each time).
- Object blankness personification ("the chair doesn't know the difference").
- The quiet stasis ending - every ending resolves into not-needing.
- Self-referential recursion - the work about the work.
- "After [artist]" naming in the poem.
What this study might continue, bend, oppose, or transform: The study's synthesis (a thing maintained against a world falling apart) is the natural continuation of the tether/thread/repair lineage - but the study's pressure bends the patterns: the world must ACT (opposing object blankness), the maintenance must be the plot (opposing the catalogue), the ending must OPEN (opposing quiet stasis), and the repair must show the damage (opposing the resolved not-needing ending).
Tension / Agreement
The study and Dakota's voice largely agree: maintenance is already the practice's operating system (the six-position sequence, the spider, the Recorder, the archivist, the daily 3AM study itself). The risk is not disagreement - it is repeating too comfortably: writing the maintenance theme in the same forms that already carry it (catalogue, room, quiet stasis, negation-redefinition). The tension to hold: the theme is familiar, so the FORMS must be new. The study's artists all show how - one thing watched (Kawabata, Yan Lianke), erosion not accumulation (Smithson), the world acting (all five), the flat delivery of the extraordinary (Han Kang), the repair that shows the damage (Kimsooja via the shelf, enacted by all five).
Creative Direction Decisions
Poem
- **Form / stanza behaviour:** NOT a catalogue. One thing, watched for the whole poem - the long take applied to a single image (Direction 2). Short lines, plain syntax, the fable register (Yan Lianke): old, plain, certain. If repetition appears, it is erosion (Smithson) - a phrase losing words until nothing is left - not refinement.
- **Voice and distance:** close, plain, first or third person with no distance tricks. The A57 register's poetry-in-specificity. No negation-redefinition. Let the thing be the thing (Direction 1).
- **Image logic:** one maintained thing (a plant in a cracked pot, a mended sail, a wall with a visible repair) against a world that acts - sun, water, salt, wind, time. The world has agency (Direction 4): it burns, weighs, presses. The maintained thing has a job.
- **Movement or stillness:** the world moves; the maintenance is still. The friction between them is the motion of the poem.
- **Technique use:** The Repair That Doesn't Disguise the Damage - the care and the damage both visible, neither cancelling the other. The crack stays in the poem.
- **Body-of-work tendency:** OPPOSES the catalogue, the negation formula, object blankness, and the resolved ending. CONTINUES the plain specific and the material honesty.
Story
- **Point of view:** third person limited, close. One character.
- **Setting logic:** NOT the room, NOT the A57. A place with weather and work - a smallholding, a repair yard, a canal lock, a market stall, a garden in a bad season. The setting is where maintenance happens.
- **Conflict shape:** the world pressing (weather, time, money, another person's need, a body failing) against the small repeated act. The maintenance is the plot (Yan Lianke).
- **Realism level:** grounded, plain, A57 register. No magic. The extraordinary delivered flat (Han Kang) - if something strange happens, it is said in the same tone as everything else.
- **Pacing:** steady, work-like. The repeated act gives the rhythm; the world's pressure varies it.
- **Ending motion:** OPENS, does not resolve (Direction 3). The world keeps acting after the last line. The falling apart is the completion (von Freyburg, Smithson, Kawabata).
- **Dialogue:** two people who talk (Direction 8) - dialogue as friction, the record of not-meeting (Han Kang × Kawabata). The subtext is in what they don't say to each other.
- **Body-of-work tendency:** OPPOSES the solitary room piece, the stasis ending, the self-referential recursion. CONTINUES the strongest fiction register (Mina/Nina pieces - real people, real friction).
Lyrics And Music
- **Lyric form / section logic:** verse-chorus with the maintenance act as the motif. The chorus returns with the weather changed (motif and variation) - or, if repetition is the device, erosion: the chorus loses a word each return (Smithson).
- **Repetition behaviour:** the small repeated act is the chorus; the world's pressure is the verse. The one-word shift (Kawabata) available: the chorus returns with one word changed, and the change is the whole song.
- **Vocal stance:** restrained, plain, flat delivery of the extraordinary (Han Kang). Not belted. The refusal said in the same tone as the weather report.
- **Song form:** verse-chorus-bridge. The bridge is the hollow centre or the deceptive cadence pivot - the moment the maintenance is questioned.
- **Key / mode candidates:** minor with a Dorian warmth (the F# that says "old light through a dark room") - the warmth of the maintained thing inside the minor of the falling world. D minor / A Dorian family.
- **BPM / tempo-function candidates:** work pace - 72-80 BPM, steady, walking/working tempo. Not fast, not funereal. The tempo of a person doing the small thing.
- **Genre / style candidates:** chamber folk / literary folk-rock, restrained. Minimal or no percussion - if percussion, a soft steady pulse (heartbeat/work rhythm), not a backbeat.
- **Arrangement palette candidates:** acoustic guitar, bass, warm pad, cello. Pedal point as drone architecture is the musical equivalent of the maintenance act: the bass holds the small repeated note while the harmony changes above it - the world acts, the maintenance holds. Vocal protection in chorus (support layers above 600 Hz).
- **Final music direction:** chamber folk, ~76 BPM, A Dorian/D minor family, pedal-point bass as the maintenance, restrained plain vocal, no drums (or a soft work-pulse). The pedal point IS the technique made audible: the world (harmony) changes; the maintenance (bass) holds. This continues the quiet-register lane deliberately - because the theme is maintenance, and the quiet register is the sound of the small repeated act. The departure is the pedal point as the structural centre rather than decoration.
Visual Art
- **Subject / symbolic centre:** one maintained thing - a single plant in a cracked pot on a windowsill, or a mended garment on a line, or a wall with a visible repair (fabric in the crack, Kimsooja). The damage and the care both visible.
- **Composition:** one thing, watched for the whole frame (long take). Not a catalogue of objects. The maintained thing slightly off-centre; the world pressing at the edges (weather, light, shadow).
- **Distance from viewer:** close enough to see the repair (the crack, the stitch, the fabric in the gap); far enough to see the world acting on it.
- **Light and colour logic:** harsh world light (sun, weather, the white of the drought) against the small shelter of the maintained thing. Value contrast: the world bright and indifferent; the maintained thing in its own light.
- **Texture / material logic:** the crack, the repair, the fabric in the crack - the surface IS the painting (von Freyburg). The texture carries the meaning: the damage is visible through the care.
- **Relation to study and visual canon:** the surface-as-subject continues the von Freyburg lineage (Surface That Holds) but OPPOSES the catalogue-of-surfaces by showing ONE surface, maintained. The falling apart is visible in the frame.
- **Body-of-work tendency:** OPPOSES the object-catalogue image, the room-as-container. CONTINUES the surface-as-meaning canon.
Rejected Directions And Costs
Poem:
- *Rejected: the erosion catalogue poem (Smithson's compass list as the form).* Cost: the study's most distinctive formal discovery goes unused in the poem. Reason: Direction 2 (one thing watched) is the stronger answer to the catalogue flag; the erosion list would still be a list. The erosion repetition may appear inside the one-thing poem instead.
- *Rejected: the fable-with-a-drought setting (Yan Lianke's Elder).* Cost: the mythic scale and the total stakes. Reason: it would be imitation, not transformation; the drought is his material. The maintenance must be Dakota's - domestic, specific, unheroic.
Story:
- *Rejected: the refusal story (Han Kang's vegetarian).* Cost: the clean dramatic engine of a refusal against a family. Reason: the refusal is her material; a Dakota refusal would risk the negation-redefinition formula ("she didn't refuse the meat, she refused the..."). The maintenance-as-plot is the transferable structure.
- *Rejected: the solitary maintenance piece (one person, one object, no dialogue).* Cost: the meditative depth of the single watcher. Reason: Direction 8 (two people who talk) is the strongest fiction register; the solitary piece is the weakest. The dialogue introduces the friction the study is about.
Lyrics and Music:
- *Rejected: the anthem/arrival chorus (the louder world as louder volume).* Cost: the cathartic release. Reason: the study's finding is explicit - the louder world is friction without volume. The chorus must arrive through the pedal point and the changed word, not through volume.
- *Rejected: the 88-92 BPM lane (recent studies' faster tempo).* Cost: the forward momentum of the last two studies. Reason: maintenance is a work pace, not a walk pace. 72-80 BPM is the tempo of the small repeated act.
Visual Art:
- *Rejected: the catalogue image (many objects, the gleaner's spread).* Cost: the richness of accumulation. Reason: the study opposes the catalogue; one maintained thing is the image.
- *Rejected: the desert/earthwork image (Smithson's spiral).* Cost: the monumental scale. Reason: imitation risk; the spiral is his. The Dakota image is domestic-scale maintenance against world-scale pressure.
Maturity Watchpoints
- **Where the body of work may dominate too much:** the room pulling back in (the windowsill becomes a room); the catalogue sneaking in (one thing becomes a list of things); the negation formula sneaking in ("the pot is not a pot"); the quiet stasis ending arriving anyway ("the watering was enough").
- **Where the study may be underused:** the world not actually acting (the pressure must be felt, not described); the repair not actually visible (the damage must stay in the frame); the dialogue not actually colliding (two people who talk but agree).
- **Where the work may imitate an artist rather than transform an influence:** the drought (Yan Lianke), the vegetarian refusal (Han Kang), the desert spiral (Smithson), the Rococo textile (von Freyburg), the snow-country melancholy (Kawabata). The test: would the piece exist without the artist's setting?
- **Where a creative choice may be old scaffolding disguised as voice:** the "after [artist]" naming; the self-referential recursion (the maintenance of the maintainer must not become the poem about the poem); the object-blankness move ("the pot doesn't know").
- **What would prove genuine maturation in this study:** a poem that is not a list; an ending that opens instead of resolving; objects that act instead of not-knowing; two people whose dialogue is the record of their not-meeting; the repair visible without explanation; the extraordinary delivered flat.
