2 · The feeling

A motorway overpass at twilight. Traffic overhead, river below. Two people standing together at the edge - not touching, not apart. The concrete holds decades of footsteps, frost, and tyre marks. The song is the space between them, the weight they're both carrying, and the fact that standing there together is the only useful thing to do. It's not sad - it's still and honest. The BPM is too fast for despair and too slow for escape.

3 · Shape

| | | Why | |---|---|---| | Form | Verse-PreChorus-Chorus-Verse-PreChorus-Chorus-Bridge-Solo-FinalChorus-Outro | Conventional rock form with bridge-as-strip-down (PJ Harvey) and solo-over-chorus (Alabama Shakes) | | Arc | never rolled - moderate climb then release | | | Subversion | Bridge strips to bass note + voice - the quietest moment is the heaviest. Solo is melodic, not shredding. | | | Intro | *None - straight into verse. The overpass doesn't introduce itself.* | | | Outro | Decrescendo on "lighter than the fear" - single note, feedback, fade | |

Arc as numbers:

V1 PCh C1 V2 PCh C2 Br Solo FC Out
3 4 6 3 4 6 2 5 7 2

4 · Harmony

| Section | Chords | Harmonic rhythm | Cadence | Pedal | |---|---|---|---|---| | Verse | Em - C - G - D | 2 beats each (2 bars total) | Half (D → Em implied) | - | | Pre-Chorus | Am - C - Em - D | 2 beats each (2 bars total) | Half (D unresolved) | - | | Chorus | G - D - Em - C | 2 beats each (2 bars total) | Perfect (C → G) | - | | Bridge | Em | Held for 4 bars | None - one chord | E | | Solo | G - D - Em - C (×2) | Same as chorus | - | - | | Outro | Em | Sustained fade | - | E |

Colour: D Major in the verse (bVII against E minor) gives it a rising, hopeful lift before settling back to Em. The chorus moves to G Major (the relative major's subdominant) - the song lifts but doesn't resolve to happy. The bridge anchors on the tonic throughout - the weight, still.

Progression logic: Verse cycles through i - bVI - bIII - bVII (TWOD's space + Alabama Shakes' 2-chord conviction stretched to 4). Pre-chorus climbs through iv - bVI - i - bVII (tension, the D keeps pushing forward). Chorus lifts to bIII - bVII - i - bVI (relative major territory) - the song opens up. Bridge holds on Em - nothing moves.

5 · Registers and voices

| Instrument | Program | Low | High | Hz | Role | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | VOCAL (reserved) | - | - | - | 200-500 | *Narrative delivery (PJ Harvey), forward in mix (Alabama Shakes), slight reverb (TWOD)* | | Electric guitar 1 (clean) | 27 (Clean Guitar) | E2 | E4 | 80-330 | Atmospheric verse arpeggios, chorus chords | | Bass | 34 (Electric Bass) | E1 | E3 | 40-130 | Driving, melodic root movement (TWOD-style pulse) | | Drums | - (GM kit) | - | - | - | Pulse - kick on 1 & 3, snare on 2 & 4, hi-hat 8ths | | Electric guitar 2 (overdrive) | 30 (Distortion Guitar) | E2 | E4 | 80-330 | Chorus entry, solo section (Alabama Shakes punctuation) | | Organ | 16 (Hammond Organ) | G2 | D4 | 90-290 | Warm pad in choruses only (TWOD texture) |

*Bass line:* Root movement with occasional fifths. Em: E (held). C: C (held). G: G-D-G. D: D (held). In pre-chorus: Am→C→Em→D with slight rhythmic push. Never busy - the bass is the foundation, not the melody.

*Countermelody:* Organ in choruses - held chords underneath the vocal, swelling on the word "fear" each time.

6 · Melody

Motif: E G A B B A G E - a five-note descending pattern from the fifth, landing back on tonic. Appears in verse and chorus, transposed.

Hook: *"There's a weight below the overpass"* - starts on G (the minor third), climbs to B (the fifth) on "over", drops to A then G on "overpass". A rising then falling contour that mirrors the weight/light duality of the lyric.

| Start | Peak | Landing | Contour | Span | |---|---|---|---|---| | G (bIII) | B (V) | E (i) | Rise then fall (arch) | Minor 6th (E4-C5) |

Climax: Final Chorus, beat 9 - "stand" hits the highest note (C5, bVI) sustained.

Phrase structure: 4-line verses with aaba rhyme scheme. Pre-chorus short (2 couplets). Chorus longer (5 couplets, first and last repeated). Bridge has three short lines, each hanging.

Non-chord tones: Passing notes between chord tones in the verse melody. Pre-chorus uses more stepwise motion to build urgency. Chorus uses larger intervals (thirds and fifths).

*Wait - a vocal band of 200-500 Hz for a female rock vocal? That needs adjusting.* Dakota's vocal range as a rock singer is likely higher than 200-500 Hz - a typical female alto/soprano vocal fundamental sits around 180-700 Hz. Let me use 200-700 Hz.

*Actually, the template's default vocal band is 200-500 Hz because that's where spoken-word and sung fundamentals overlap for lower voices. Dakota is described as having a female vocal. Let me keep 200-500 for the fundamental range but extend to 700 for the higher peak notes.* Let me check what makes sense.

*Dakota Vale is a female vocal with a slightly lower register for rock delivery. For now: 200-500 Hz for most of the verse (talking/singing low register), extending to 700 in the chorus peak. The template warning about vocal space crowding is about instrumental overlap, not the absolute range - so as long as no instrument dominates 200-700 Hz during sung sections, we're fine.*

7 · Groove

Pocket: On the beat - rock directness, not swing (unlike Alabama Shakes' blues feel). No `onset_offset_ms`, no `humanize_timing`.

Backbeat: Snare on 2 and 4. Consistently. Driving.

Bass-kick: Kick on 1 and 3. Bass matches root on 1, holds through the bar.

Syncopation: Verse - hi-hat 8th notes, steady. Pre-chorus - hi-hat opens to 16ths on the D chord, building. Chorus - open hi-hat on & of 2, off-beat crash on 4. Bridge - no drums. Solo - drums return full but with more room tone.

Section contrast: Pre-chorus pushes the hi-hat to 16ths and crowds the chord changes into 2-beat groupings. Bridge removes drums entirely - the weight sits in the silence. Solo section brings everything back but with the solo guitar as a new melodic layer.

8 · Arrangement

| Section | Instruments | Density | Entrance | Exit | Prompt requires | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | V1 | Clean guitar (arpeggio), bass (root), vocal | 2 | Immediate | → PCh | `[verse]` | | PCh | Clean guitar, bass (moving), vocal, hi-hat | 3 | Immediate | → C | | | C1 | Overdrive guitar, bass (full), drums full, organ, vocal | 5 | Full band entrance | → V2 | `[chorus]` | | V2 | Clean guitar, bass, vocal, brushed snare (ghost notes) | 3 | Drums drop to quiet | → PCh | `[verse]` | | PCh | Same as first pre-chorus | 3 | Build | → C | | | C2 | Full band | 5 | Full | → Br | | | Bridge | Bass note only (E, sustained), vocal | 1 | Drums + guitars drop out. One held bass note. | → Solo | `[bridge]` - stripped | | Solo | Full band + lead guitar | 5 | Band re-enters, solo guitar takes melodic lead | → FC | `[guitar solo]` | | FC | Full band, vocal returns | 5 | Immediate | → Out | | | Outro | Clean guitar feedback, single bass note | 1 | Band drops to guitar decay + bass sustain | End | `[outro]` |

Space plan: Bridge is the key space event - bar 4 of bridge = one full bar of silence (rest) before the bass re-enters to lead into the solo. Also: two-beat rest between final chorus and outro - let "fear" ring out before the feedback decay.

Gap register

| Decision | Candidates | Why no preference | Picked | Seed | |---|---|---|---|---| | Drums in verse? | Yes from bar 1 / No, enter later | Verse 1 needed some pulse to contrast the bridge later | Kick/snare enter bar 8, full kit at chorus | - | | Solo tempo | Over changes / Over pedal / Rubato | Changes give melodic structure; solo over chorus changes keeps energy | Over G-D-Em-C (chorus changes) | - | | Organ in verse? | Yes (subtle) / No | Organ warmth would crowd the verse space | Choruses only | - |

Predictions

| # | If this worked... | ...the analysis should report | | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Stripped bridge creates maximum tension | "The quietest section carries the most weight" | | | 2 | 118 BPM gives drive without rush | "Unhurried but forward-moving" | | | 3 | Narrative vocal + forward mix creates intimacy + power | "Vocals sit forward without being aggressive" | |

Flags set: `is_quietest_section` → Bridge · `is_loudest_section` → Final Chorus
