The Patient Room
The Patient Room
---
You are still in the room and the room is still in you.
I.
The room has a sound that is not silence and is not the refrigerator and is not the pipe behind the wall ticking like a slow clock that keeps time with something other than minutes.
The room has a sound like someone breathing who has been breathing so long the breath has become the room.
II.
The room has a light that comes through one window and falls on the floor in a shape that changes with the hours but always lands in the same place.
You stand in the light. You stand out of the light. The light does not care. The light is patient.
III.
The room has a weight that is not the furniture. The furniture is old and has been moved against every wall in every configuration and the room has worn each arrangement like a coat.
The weight is what's left when the furniture is gone. The weight is the habit of standing in the corner near the window at three in the afternoon when the light is best and there is nothing to see by it.
IV.
The room has a time that is not the clock. The clock was removed weeks ago or years ago and the room kept its own time which is slower and more regular and does not divide into anything useful.
The room's time pools like water on a flat surface. It does not drain. It does not evaporate. It simply sits and the sitting is the time.
V.
You are still in the room and the room is still in you.
The room does not want you. The room does not want you to leave. The room is doing what rooms do which is to hold what is put in them and to let the holding change both the held and the holder until the held is the room and the holder is the held and the door is a detail nobody remembers the location of.
