Poem - "The Thread That Holds"

After Anne Carson's plain sentences and Anni Albers's thread as drawing

---

The thread goes under and over. This is not a metaphor.

The thread goes under and over and the picture appears the way a day appears - not all at once but by the passing through of one thing behind another.

I am making a picture with a line that can't be erased because it was never drawn. It was woven. The mistake is structural. The correction is the next row.

Someone said: take the line for a walk. I took it everywhere I could. Under, over, under. The picture is what's left when the walking is done.

I heard an orchestra inside the guitar. Not in the strings. In the space between the strings where the sound has already happened and is only waiting to be heard.

The thread goes under and over. The wire goes under and over. The sentence goes under and over. Under: the thinking. Over: the saying. The picture is the gap between.

I will take the thread everywhere I can.
