Composition Plan - Threshold

Date: 2026-07-30 · Study: `days/2026-07-30-composition-test/` · Guide track: `composition/guide-track.json`

First composition under the new system. Not tied to a 3 AM study - working from
the feeling the B guide track opened up. Testing the full 14-step pipeline.

2 · The feeling

Standing in a doorway between a warm room and a cold one, and the crossing is the point. The warm room has people in it. The cold one is outside, or empty, or honest - you're not sure which. The piece sits in that threshold. It doesn't go through. It doesn't go back. The weight is in the not-crossing, the sustained moment where both temperatures are on your skin.

The chorus is what happens when you almost step through - the air shifts, something opens, but you don't commit. The final chorus is the closest you get. The outro is stepping back inside and closing the door.

Key: A minor. The feeling is liminal, not tragic. A minor gives the dark without the finality of D minor or the brightness of E minor. The Dorian D borrow (D major in A minor) is the warmth from the room behind you - one flash, not a permanent temperature change. Tempo: 62 BPM. Slow enough to feel each beat as a held breath. Not a dirge - a hesitation.

3 · Shape

| | | Why | |---|---|---| | Form | verse-chorus | The return structure suits the doorway: you keep coming back to the threshold. | | Arc | hollow | Dense edges, empty centre. The bridge is the emptiest point - the moment you almost crossed. | | Subversion | formal | The final chorus doesn't escalate - it thins. The door closes, it doesn't open. | | Intro | motif-preview | The guitar states the motif alone. You're already in the room. | | Outro | dissolve | The door closes. Sound fades, not stops. (Rolled: dissolve, seed 1926625700) |

Arc as numbers - intensity 1-10 per section:

Intro V1 C1 V2 C2 Br V3 FC Out
  3 4 6 4 7 2 4 5 3

Note: the final chorus (FC) is quieter than C2. The subversion: you expect the climax, you get the withdrawal.

4 · Harmony

| Section | Chords | Harmonic rhythm | Cadence | Pedal | |---|---|---|---|---| | Intro | Am | per-section | none | A (tonic) | | V1 | Am → F → C → G | per-bar (rolled per-half-bar but 4 chords in 4 bars = per-bar feel) | none (rolled) | A | | C1 | Am → F → C | per-two-bars (each chord 2 beats at 62 BPM) | plagal (F → Am) | none | | V2 | Am → F → C → G | per-bar | none | A | | C2 | Am → F → C → D | per-two-bars, D enters last 2 beats | deceptive (D → ... doesn't resolve to Am, falls to bridge) | none | | Bridge | F → G | per-bar | half (→G, suspended) | F (subdominant) | | V3 | Am → F → C → G | per-bar | none | A | | FC | Am → F → C | per-two-bars, slower than C1/C2 | plagal (F → Am) | none | | Outro | Am → F → Am | per-two-bars | plagal | A |

Colour: D major borrowed from A Dorian at the end of C2. It's the warmth from the room - one bar, then it's gone. The chorus doesn't resolve to it; the D opens the door to the bridge, which is the coldest section.

Harmonic rhythm roll: per-half-bar (seed 327576409). Applied to verses: the verse moves every bar, which at 62 BPM feels like half-bar movement in a faster piece. The choruses hold each chord for 2 beats, which at this tempo reads as per-two-bars.

5 · Registers and voices

| Instrument | Program | Low | High | Hz | Role | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | VOCAL (reserved) | - | - | - | 200-500 | *Suno fills this. Keep it clear where it sings.* | | Bass | 32 (acoustic bass) | A1 | D3 | 110-147 | Harmonic floor, root movement, pedal tones | | Guitar | 24 (nylon) | E3 | E5 | 165-659 | Fingerpicking, motif carrier, melodic fragments | | Strum | 24 (nylon) | A4 | E6 | 440-1320 | Chorus lift, above the vocal band (lesson from B render) | | Pad | 89 (warm pad) | E3 | B3 | 165-247 | Sustained harmony, textural bed |

Vocal band: 200-500 Hz reserved in all chorus sections. Strum lives at 440+ Hz (above). Bass lives at 110-147 Hz (below). Guitar fingerpicking in verses touches 165-659 Hz but thins to 330+ Hz in choruses. Pad sits at 165-247 Hz in verses, drops out in choruses.

Bass line: Roots with passing tones. In verses: A → walk to F → C → walk to G. In choruses: sustained A, then F, then C - longer notes, fewer moves. In bridge: F pedal, then G pedal. The bass is a line, not a root generator.

Countermelody: Guitar motif answers the vocal gap in verses. In choruses, the strum provides textural contrast, not melodic content.

6 · Melody

Motif: E4 → A4 → G4 → E4 (descending from the fifth to the root, passing through the fourth). Three notes falling, one returning. The shape is a sigh.

Hook: Not notated in the guide track (GT-2). The hook lives in the Suno vocal. The guide track provides harmonic and rhythmic support for it.

Climax: The D major borrow at the end of C2 (beat 47-48). The F#4 in the guitar is the highest note in the piece, happening once. It's the moment the warmth from the room touches you.

Phrase structure: Antecedent-consequent in verses (4-bar question, 4-bar answer). Choruses are through-composed (one long phrase that doesn't repeat).

Non-chord tones: G4 over Am (passing), F4 over C (neighbour), B4 over D major in C2 (appoggiatura, the Dorian colour note).

---

7 · Groove

Pocket: Slightly behind (onset_offset_ms: guitar +15, bass 0, strum +25, pad +40). Not lazy - hesitant. The doorway feeling. Backbeat: No drums. Tacet. The piece is pulse without percussion. Bass-kick: No kick. Bass carries the pulse alone. Syncopation: Bass anticipation at end of verse phrases (beat 3.5 of bar 4 in each verse). One per section. Section contrast: Verses have melodic bass movement. Choruses have sustained bass. The groove change is from "moving" to "holding," not from "sparse" to "dense."

8 · Arrangement

| Section | Instruments | Density | Entrance | Exit | |---|---|---|---|---| | Intro | guitar | 1 | motif-preview | - | | V1 | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | bass: emerging (bar 2) | - | | C1 | guitar, bass, strum | 3 | strum: surprise (rolled, seed 441160391) | pad exits (drop-out transition, rolled seed 1866105231) | | V2 | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | pad: emerging (re-enters) | - | | C2 | guitar, bass, strum | 3 | - | pad exits (drop-out) | | Bridge | guitar (high), bass | 2 | guitar shifts to high register | strum exits, bass continues | | V3 | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | pad: from-silence | - | | FC | guitar, bass | 2 | - | strum does NOT enter. Subversion: the lift is absent. | | Outro | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | pad returns | all dissolve |

Space plan:

Entrance roll: surprise (seed 441160391). The strum enters at C1 without warning - the doorway opens, not builds.

9 · Timeline

| Section | Start | Length | Chords | Groove | Instruments | Density | → next | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | Intro | 0 | 4 | Am (pedal) | static | guitar | 1 | motif-preview | | V1 | 4 | 8 | Am F C G | moving bass | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | drop-out (pad leaves at beat 11.5) | | C1 | 12 | 8 | Am F C (2 beats each) | sustained bass | guitar, bass, strum | 3 | direct | | V2 | 20 | 8 | Am F C G | moving bass | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | drop-out | | C2 | 28 | 8 | Am F C D (2 beats each, D last 2) | sustained bass | guitar, bass, strum | 3 | caesura (2-beat rest) | | Bridge | 30 | 8 | F G (4 beats each) | pedal bass | guitar (high), bass | 2 | direct | | V3 | 38 | 8 | Am F C G | moving bass | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | drop-out | | FC | 46 | 8 | Am F C (2 beats each) | sustained bass | guitar, bass | 2 | caesura (4-beat rest) | | Outro | 50 | 8 | Am F Am (2 beats each, last Am 4 beats) | static | guitar, bass, pad | 3 | dissolve |

Wait - the timeline needs to be contiguous. Let me recalculate:

| Section | Start | Length | End | |---|---|---|---| | Intro | 0 | 4 | 4 | | V1 | 4 | 8 | 12 | | C1 | 12 | 8 | 20 | | V2 | 20 | 8 | 28 | | C2 | 28 | 8 | 36 | | Bridge | 36 | 8 | 44 | | V3 | 44 | 8 | 52 | | FC | 52 | 8 | 60 | | Outro | 60 | 8 | 68 |

Total: 68 beats. The rests are WITHIN sections (pad exits before section end), not between sections. The drop-out transition means the pad leaves 0.5 beats before the section ends, creating a gap that the next section fills.
