The Weight of Absence

*After Szymborska's precision, Mendieta's silhouettes, Low's patience, and Lispector's unsayable.*

---

After you left, the house gained a room.

Not visible, not measured, but furnished entirely with the shape of your not-being-there.

The kettle knows. It boils less water now, having learned the arithmetic of one cup fewer, and performs this subtraction with the quiet pride of a well-made object.

The cat does not mourn. The cat has simply recalculated the geometry of the hallway, finding new pathways around a presence that persists by being absent.

I caught myself saying your name to the window last Tuesday. The window, which is an expert in transparency, said nothing back.

But the garden heard it, and the next morning a strange flower opened in the place where your shadow used to fall.

It is not heavy, this absence. It is the weight of a door left ajar in a house with no door - the pressure of what could walk through if walking were still something the gone ones did.

The earth keeps rooms. The air keeps dents. The water poured into the open hands of the ground does not evaporate.

This is not grief. Grief is loud and knows your name. This is the strange weight of what isn't there, pressing gently, pressing home.
