1 · What came in
- **Artists:** not re-studying. Working from the existing prompt's mood and delivery spec.
- **Variation roll:** 52 (strange) - already baked into the prompt
- **Journey:** this is a re-compose to test v1.3.1 against a measured baseline (−7.4 dB vocal burial)
- **Inner life:** the prompt carries the emotional weight - "strange and preparatory not mournful"
- **Written works:** the lyrics are fixed. They are the spec.
- **Preset loaded:** none - the prompt is specific enough

1b · The spec
From `check_suno_fit.py` output:
| | From the prompt | |---|---| | Tempo | 70 BPM | | Key | A minor | | Palette | fingerpicked steel-string guitar, bowed double bass, atmospheric halo pad, guitar harmonics | | Must NOT contain | no drums, no synth, no autotune, no programming, no vibrato | | Form | Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Final Chorus → Outro (7 sections) |
| Section | Lines | Syl | Bars needed | Arrangement the prompt requires | |---|---|---|---|---| | Verse 1 | 4 | 36 | 5 | fewer than neighbours | | Chorus | 4 | 39 | 5 | one instrument only (single guitar chord swell) | | Verse 2 | 3 | 46 | 6 | bass starts here | | Chorus | 4 | 39 | 5 | more than before | | Bridge | 4 | 33 | 4 | - | | Final Chorus | 4 | 27 | 4 | everything present | | Outro | 4 | 14 | 2 | one instrument only (single guitar note sustaining) |
Sung content total: 124 beats / 106.3s · plus instrumental: 28 beats (intro + outro extensions) Guide track must be at least: 152 beats
Delivery: 2.2 syl/sec (comfortable sung ballad)
Three arrangement-event conflicts in the old guide track
1. Chorus 1 - prompt says "single guitar chord swell" but old guide had bass + guitar_fingerpick + guitar_strum + pad. Fix: Chorus 1 is guitar only. The "single guitar chord swell" is the arrangement event. Bass and pad drop out for C1. 2. Verse 2 - prompt says "bass enters" but bass was already playing from Verse 1. Fix: no bass in Verse 1 or Intro. Bass enters at Verse 2 as the arrangement event. The prompt marks it explicitly. 3. Outro - prompt says "single guitar note sustaining" but old guide had 5 instruments. Fix: Outro is guitar only. One sustained note, then silence.
These are not creative choices - they are prompt requirements the old guide track violated.

2 · The feeling
The prompt says "strange and preparatory not mournful." That means the music leans forward, not backward. The weight isn't grief - it's the pressure of something about to arrive. The room gained a room. The air kept your dent. This is the moment before the door opens, not the moment after it closes. Musically: sustained tones that don't resolve, harmonic movement that approaches cadence but diverts, rests that feel held rather than empty. The vocal sits close and dry in verses, then opens into room reverb in choruses - but the choruses are sparse, not full. The "single guitar chord swell" in C1 is a held breath, not a release. The bass entering in Verse 2 is the first sign that something is accumulating. The Final Chorus is where the accumulation breaks through - "belted but controlled" - and the Outro returns to a single sustained note, which is the same gesture as the Intro but darker: the room hasn't changed, the awareness has.

3 · Shape
| | | Why | |---|---|---| | Form | V1→C1→V2→C2→Br→FC→Outro | given by the lyric | | Arc | classic build with hollow centre | accumulate to Final Chorus, but Bridge and V3 are the hollow - the prompt's "caesura" and "vulnerable" tags demand a drop | | Subversion | C1 is solo guitar, not the obvious "first chorus = full band" | the prompt requires it - the subversion is built into the arrangement event | | Intro | none - start with Verse 1 | the prompt has no intro tag. V1 opens the song. | | Outro | single guitar note sustaining, then silence | prompt requires "single guitar note sustaining" and "pad fades to silence" - but the prompt also says the pad fades, so pad is present but fading, and guitar is the last thing heard |
Wait - re-reading the Outro tag: "whispered | single guitar note sustaining | pad fades to silence." The "single guitar note sustaining" modifies the vocal delivery , and "pad fades to silence" is a separate arrangement event. So the Outro has: whispered vocal, one sustained guitar note, and pad fading. That's two instruments (guitar + pad), not one. But `check_suno_fit.py` flagged "single instrument only" - let me re-check.
Actually, the checker parses the tag as "single guitar note sustaining" → solo instrument. The "pad fades to silence" is an exit event, not a second active instrument. So: guitar plays one sustained note, pad is present but fading out. The exit of the pad IS the fade. I'll implement: guitar holds one note, pad present but with a rapid fade (exit by beat 2), guitar rings alone for the remaining beats.
Arc as numbers:
V1 C1 V2 C2 Br FC Out
3 4 5 6 2 8 3
C1 is low (4) because it's solo guitar - a held breath, not a release. V2 rises because bass enters. C2 is higher because more layers. Bridge drops to 2 (caesura, vulnerable). Final Chorus peaks at 8. Outro returns to 3.

4 · Harmony
| Section | Chords | Harmonic rhythm | Cadence | Pedal | |---|---|---|---|---| | V1 | Am → Fmaj7 → Cmaj7 → Am | 1.0/bar | half (→V implied by Cmaj7) | none | | C1 | Am(2) → Fmaj7(2) → Cmaj7(2) | 0.5/bar | none - sustained | none (solo guitar) | | V2 | Am → Fmaj7 → Cmaj7 → Am | 1.0/bar | half | A pedal (bass enters on A, holds) | | C2 | Am(2) → Fmaj7(2) → Cmaj7(2) | 0.5/bar | deceptive (→Dm at end?) | none | | Bridge | Dm(2) → E(2) | 0.5/bar | half (→E, suspended) | D pedal then E pedal | | FC | Am(2) → Fmaj7(2) → Cmaj7(2) → Dm(1) → E(1) | 0.5/bar accelerating | authentic (E→Am implied) | none | | Outro | Am | static | none | A pedal |
Colour: The Dm→E at the end of the Final Chorus is the one chromatic/colour move - Dm is diatonic but the E major (V of Am) is the dominant bringing everything home. The acceleration from 0.5/bar to 1.0/bar in the last 2 bars of FC is the harmonic rhythm speeding up before the cadence. This is the only section where harmonic rhythm changes mid-section.

5 · Registers and voices
The vocal goes in first. 200-500 Hz reserved. This is the −7.4 dB lesson. Nothing plays in the vocal band during choruses where the vocal sits.
| Instrument | Program | Low | High | Hz | Role | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | bass | acoustic_bass (32) | A1 | C2 | 55-65 | root notes, held tones, enters V2 | | guitar_fingerpick | acoustic_guitar_steel (24) | A3 | G4 | 220-392 | melodic fragments in verses, sparse | | guitar_strum | acoustic_guitar_steel (24) | A4 | C6 | 440-1047 | chord swells in choruses, ABOVE vocal band | | pad | halo_pad (89) | A4 | C5 | 440-523 | atmospheric texture, high register (NOT A2) | | high_element | guitar_harmonics (24) | A5 | E6 | 880-1320 | spectral brightness, enters C2 |
Key change from old guide: guitar_strum moved to A4-C6 (440-1320 Hz) - above the vocal band. The old guide had strum at A4-A5 which is 440-880, still partially in the vocal's 200-500 seat. Now the strum starts at A4 (440) but the sustained notes sit at C5-A5 (523-880), and the highest extensions reach C6 (1047) and E6 (1320). The strum is the "single guitar chord swell" in C1 - it plays alone, above where the vocal will sit.
Bass line: enters at Verse 2 on A1, holds roots. In V2 it adds a passing tone (C2 → A1 → E2) to create movement. In choruses it holds roots for 7 beats. In the bridge it drops to D1 then E1 - the lowest notes in the piece, grounding the "vulnerable" section.
Countermelody: none. The prompt's density is sparse. Adding a countermelody would fight the "strange and preparatory" mood.
---
6 · Melody
Motif: A3 → C4 → E4 (ascending third + third). This is the opening gesture of V1. It survives transposition: in V2 it becomes A3 → C4 → E4 → A4 (extending up), in the Bridge it becomes D3 → F4 → A4 (transposed to Dm), in the FC it reaches E4 → G4 → A4 → C5 (the climax).
Hook: The chorus hook is the "single guitar chord swell" - a sustained chord that swells and fades. This is not a melodic hook but a textural one. Written once, copy-pasted: same chord voicing, same swell shape, same duration. Vary the dynamics only.
| Start | Peak | Landing | Contour | Span | |---|---|---|---|---| | A4 (440) | C6 (1047) | A4 (440) | swell up then fade | 440→1047→440 |
Climax: Final Chorus, beat 16 of the section (beat 136 overall) - E6 (1320 Hz) on high_element. The highest note in the piece, happening once, at the structural peak.
Phrase structure: antecedent-consequent in verses (A3→C4 opens, E4→G4 closes). The bridge refuses to close - "the atmosphere remembers differently than I do" lands on E (V), suspended.
Non-chord tones:
- V1: G4 over Fmaj7 (neighbor tone, returns to E4)
- V2: A4 over Cmaj7 (passing tone, descends to G4)
- Bridge: F4 over Dm (appoggiatura, resolves to E4)
- FC: B4 over Cmaj7 (passing tone, ascends to C5)

7 · Groove
Pocket: slightly behind (onset_offset_ms = -15). This is a slow ballad - behind the grid reads as heavy, patient, grounded. Not sloppiness - consistency.
Backbeat: none - no drums in the palette. The "backbeat" is the guitar strum swell arriving on beat 1 of each chorus chord change.
Bass-kick: no kick (no drums). The bass is the floor. It enters on beat 1 and holds.
Syncopation: one per section - the guitar_fingerpick entry in V1 lands on beat 3.5 (the "and" of 3), not beat 3. This is the only syncopation in V1. In C1 the strum swells from beat 1 but the peak velocity is at beat 2 - the swell is the syncopation. In V2 the bass passing tone lands on beat 2.5. In the Bridge the guitar fragment at beat 2 of the Dm section is the syncopation. In FC the high_element entry at beat 0.5 of the second bar is the syncopation.
Section contrast: V1 is fingerpicked fragments (melodic). C1 is sustained chords (textural). V2 adds bass movement (horizontal). C2 adds high_element (spectral). Bridge is near-empty with a caesura (negative space). FC is everything at once (full). Outro is a single sustained note (minimal).

8 · Arrangement
| Section | Instruments | Density | Entrance | Exit | Prompt requires | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | V1 | guitar_fingerpick, pad (faint) | 2 layers, sparse | guitar opens | - | fewer than neighbours | | C1 | guitar_strum ONLY | 1 layer, sustained | strum swells | everything else exits before C1 | single guitar chord swell | | V2 | guitar_fingerpick, pad, BASS ENTERS | 3 layers | bass enters (announced) | - | bass starts here | | C2 | guitar_strum, bass, pad, high_element ENTERS | 4 layers | high_element enters (emerging) | - | more than before | | Bridge | guitar_fingerpick (sparse), bass (low), pad (faint) | 2-3 layers, sparse | - | high_element exits, strum exits | - | | FC | ALL layers at max | 5 layers, full | everything returns | - | everything present | | Outro | guitar_fingerpick (one note), pad (fading) | 1-2 layers, minimal | - | pad fades, bass exits, strum exits, high_element exits | single guitar note sustaining, pad fades to silence |
Space plan:
- 1.5-beat rest before C1 (all instruments off - the breath before the held breath)
- 1.5-beat rest before C2 (same gesture, but now the listener knows what's coming)
- 4-beat caesura in Bridge at beat 12 (total silence - "the weight of absence made audible")
- 1.5-beat rest before FC (the last breath before the peak)
- Pad fades over 2 beats in Outro, guitar rings alone for 4 beats, then clean stop

9 · Timeline
| Section | Start | Length | Chords | Groove | Instruments | Density | → next | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | V1 | 0 | 20 | Am→Fmaj7→Cmaj7→Am | behind, sparse | guitar_fingerpick, pad(faint) | 2 | 1.5-beat rest | | C1 | 21.5 | 20 | Am(2)→Fmaj7(2)→Cmaj7(2) | sustained, solo | guitar_strum ONLY | 1 | bass enters | | V2 | 41.5 | 24 | Am→Fmaj7→Cmaj7→Am | behind, bass enters | guitar_fingerpick, pad, bass | 3 | 1.5-beat rest | | C2 | 65.5 | 20 | Am(2)→Fmaj7(2)→Cmaj7(2) | sustained, fuller | guitar_strum, bass, pad, high_element | 4 | dropout to bridge | | Bridge | 85.5 | 16 | Dm(2)→E(2) | sparse, caesura | guitar_fingerpick(sparse), bass(low), pad(faint) | 2-3 | 1.5-beat rest | | FC | 103 | 20 | Am(2)→Fmaj7(2)→Cmaj7(2)→Dm(1)→E(1) | full, peak | ALL | 5 | clean stop | | Outro | 123 | 8 | Am | minimal, fading | guitar_fingerpick(one note), pad(fading) | 1-2 | silence |
Total: 131 beats + 6 beats of rests = 137 beats. At 70 BPM = ~117.4 seconds. Above the 106.3s sung content minimum. Good.
Wait - the old guide was 152 beats. Let me recalculate to make sure I have enough room. The check_suno_fit said 124 beats of sung content. My total section lengths: 20+20+24+20+16+20+8 = 128 beats of section content, plus 6 beats of rests = 134 beats. That's above 124. Good.
Actually, let me adjust to use beat positions that are cleaner. Let me use the section lengths from check_suno_fit: V1=5 bars(20), C1=5 bars(20), V2=6 bars(24), C2=5 bars(20), Br=4 bars(16), FC=4 bars(16), Out=2 bars(8). Total = 128 bars of content. Plus rests: 1.5+1.5+1.5 = 4.5 beats. Grand total = 132.5 beats. At 70 BPM = 113.6 seconds. Above 106.3s minimum. Good.
Let me recalculate with FC at 4 bars (16 beats) not 5:
| Section | Start | Length | Bars | |---|---|---|---| | V1 | 0 | 20 | 5 | | (rest 1.5) | | | | | C1 | 21.5 | 20 | 5 | | V2 | 41.5 | 24 | 6 | | (rest 1.5) | | | | | C2 | 67 | 20 | 5 | | Bridge | 87 | 16 | 4 | | (rest 1.5) | | | | | FC | 104.5 | 16 | 4 | | Outro | 120.5 | 8 | 2 |
Total: 128.5 beats. 128.5 * 60/70 = 110.1 seconds. Above 106.3s. Good.

Gap register
No rolls needed. The prompt is specific enough that every decision flows from the spec. The three arrangement-event fixes (C1 solo, V2 bass entrance, Outro minimal) are prompt requirements, not gaps.

Where the prompt and the composition pulled against each other
- **C1 solo guitar:** the prompt says "single guitar chord swell" but the old guide had 4 instruments. This is a prompt requirement, not a creative choice. The fix is to strip C1 to guitar_strum only. This means C1 will sound thinner than the old guide's C1 - but that's what the prompt asked for. The old guide was wrong, not the prompt.
- **Bass entrance at V2:** the prompt says "bass enters" at V2, which means no bass in V1 or C1. This makes V1 very sparse (guitar + faint pad only) and C1 even more exposed (guitar only). The risk is that the first 40+ seconds of the song have no bass foundation. But the prompt's "strange and preparatory" mood supports this - the absence of bass IS the strange feeling.
- **Outro single guitar:** the prompt says "single guitar note sustaining" with "pad fades to silence." The pad is present but exiting. The guitar is the last thing heard. This matches the old guide's clean stop but with fewer instruments.
---
Notes to self
- C1 being solo guitar is the biggest creative risk. It's the first chorus and it has the least instruments. But the prompt explicitly asks for it. If this doesn't work, the prompt needs to change, not the composition.
- The strum re-voicing from the A/B test (moving to A5/C6) is baked in here - strum starts at A4 (440) but the sustained content sits at C5-A5 (523-880), above the vocal band. This is the fix that cleared the vocal band in the B render.
- The FC adds Dm→E at the end - the harmonic rhythm accelerates from 0.5/bar to 1.0/bar for the last 2 bars. This is the only section where the rhythm changes mid-section. It creates a sense of the cadence arriving, rather than just stopping.
