The Sign Manifold

At 3:12 the O dies again.

Not all the way. It keeps a blue edge, a bruise of vowel, enough to make the word look wounded instead of false.

She has the panel open, one hand inside the weather, one hand holding the torch between her teeth.

The road says nothing. The pumps tick in their sleep. Rain writes its receipt across the forecourt glass.

There are easier loyalties. There are doors that lock when asked.

But the sign wants current. The screw wants turning. The small transformer wants to be believed when it says it can still hum.

She touches the wire with the back of her finger.

Not prayer. Not magic.

Just the old test: is anything warm enough to answer?
