Where They Appeared

• **Caesura:** poem and lyrics, in lines where speech needed to stop before it explained too much.
• **Subtext:** story, especially the woman's claim that she came back for a coat.
• **Value Contrast:** image prompt, with bright fluorescent interior against black wet forecourt.
• **Framing / Leading Lines:** image prompt, using counter edge, road markings, fluorescent strips, and window seams to pull attention toward the woman and coat.
• **Tension And Release:** lyric structure and guide track, with restrained lift rather than a big chorus.

Why I Used Them

The study materials naturally asked for them. The theme was a public place holding private grief, so subtext mattered more than confession. The image lived or died by light/dark structure. The song needed pauses and restrained release because an anthemic version would betray the grief.

Did They Serve The Work?

Mostly yes.

Subtext helped the story stay grounded. The woman never says the central thing, but the coat, the cafe, and the bus shelter give enough context to feel it. Value contrast and leading lines gave the image prompt clear visual architecture. Lyric prosody protected the song from becoming bigger than the story.

What Became Worse Or Risky

The poem risks being too clean. Caesura and negative space can make a poem feel tasteful when it should be rougher. The image prompt also risks being too neatly composed: leading lines can become obvious if every object points at the subject.

What I Understand Differently

Technique works best here when it is a diagnostic language after the fact, not a command before the work. I did not begin by saying "use subtext"; I found the story refusing direct confession, then named subtext as the right handling.

Next Application

Use fewer deliberate techniques next time unless the work genuinely asks for them. The shelf should widen choice, not make every piece carry a visible craft label.
