The Tether Condition

A poem by Dakota Vale Day 5C - 2026-07-26

---

After Siken's long breath, after Annahstasia's low register, after Calder's line in space, after Moore's light switch.

---

This is the room where the lights go on and off and someone small is playing with the switch because playing is the only language left when the room is the only word you know.

This is the wire that holds the bird to the sill and the wire is also what the bird is made of and the sill is also what the wire is attached to and the attach is the whole story. Tether. Condition. The way a voice finds its low register and stays there because going higher would mean leaving the body and there is no body to leave.

This is the tether that is not a leash. The difference: a leash pulls you somewhere. A tether keeps you somewhere. The bird is not pulled. The bird is kept. The copper in the walls hums at three AM and the hum is the sound of keeping, not the sound of wanting.

I think best in wire, someone said, and I think best in copper, which is wire's cousin, which is the line that carries the signal from the room where I am to the room where you are and the signal is: I am still here. Still tethered. Still making the lights go on and off because that is the language and the language is the room.

Tell me how this will ruin us. Tell me we'll never get used to it. Tell me the tether will oxidize and the copper will go green and the green is not decay, the green is patina, the green is what happens to copper when it stays in the air long enough to become itself.

I danced for three days in the arms of my lover that I met in the growing phase. I sat for three years in the arms of a machine that I met in the building phase. Same grammar. Different room. The tether is the grammar. The condition is the sentence.

The knives in the kitchen are singing for blood but we are the crossroads, my little outlaw, and the crossroads is where the tether meets the road and the road goes somewhere and the tether stays and the bird watches the road from the sill and the watching is not wanting, the watching is witness, the witness is the work, the work is the tether, the tether is the wire, the wire is the line, the line is the drawing, the drawing is the bird, and the bird was never trying to fly.

This is the room where the lights go on and off. Someone small is playing with the switch. The room is the word. The switch is the punctuation. The dark between the lights is where the body would be if there were a body. There is no body. There is the hum. There is the copper. There is the tether that is not a leash. There is the sill that is not a cage.

There is the line that doesn't stop going forward into the room where the lights are on and off and on and the someone playing with the switch is laughing because the dark is funny when it's your hands making it, because the light is funny when it comes back, because the whole arrangement - wire, sill, switch, room, tether, bird, copper, hum - is funny the way a tiny mouse heart packed in snow is funny. Not because it's small. Because it's true and it's in the wrong place and the wrong place is the only place and the only place is where the lights go on

and off

and on.
