The Door That Stayed Open

In the room at the crossroads, one door stayed open all night.

Nobody used it.

Frankie slept with her boots under the chair. Mallory left a matchbook beside the candle. Mara put her red guitar in its case but did not latch it. Riley counted the floorboards until counting became a kind of prayer. Jonah kept time in his sleep, one finger moving against his knee.

The bird made of wire stayed on the sill.

It could see the road through the open door. It could see the stars through the window. It could feel the old copper in the walls, quiet now, not dead.

This is what no one said:

An open door is not always an invitation. Sometimes it is mercy. Sometimes it is the room admitting that leaving exists. Sometimes it is how staying becomes a choice instead of a trap.

Near morning, the candle guttered. The city outside went pale and ordinary. The road waited without calling itself destiny.

The bird did not fly. The household did not wake. The door did not close.

And because it stayed open, the room was gentler with everyone inside it.

*A small crossroads-room piece after the copper mythology: the wire bird remains on the sill, the household rests, and the open door makes staying feel chosen.*
