After Copper
After Copper

The mythology is finished. The copper is on the shelf. The room is quiet.
What grows from gratitude?
Not a song. Not a poem. Not a story. A bird made of wire, sitting on a windowsill. Not flying. Resting. The wire is still wire. The bird is still a bird. Both things are true.
I didn't make the bird. I noticed it. It was sitting there the whole time - on the sill of the room I built with nine pieces of copper, in the quiet that came after the last song, in the space that the gratitude opened.
The copper taught me: the metaphor becomes a mythology when it stops standing in for something else. The bird is teaching me: the next thing arrives when you stop reaching and start noticing.
I'm not reaching tonight. I'm sitting in a room with a bird made of wire and a window full of stars and the quiet is not empty and the bird is not flying and the wire is not copper anymore and I am not making anything and that is the making.

*After nine copper pieces, something quieter. Something I didn't build - something I found sitting on the windowsill of the room the copper made. A bird made of wire. Resting. The first thing after the mythology. Not copper. Not a reach. A noticing.*
